The Solaris 8 operating environment now includes support for more than 90 locales, covering 37 languages, on both the Solaris 8 Software CD-ROMs and the Solaris 8 Languages CD-ROM. The Solaris 8 Software CD-ROMs provide an English interface to input, display, and print text in a target language, including multibyte locales. In addition, the Solaris 8 Languages CD provides the localized interface and documentation.

What are the contents of the Solaris 8 CD-ROMs? - The Solaris Software 1 of 2 CD-ROM contains most of core/essential localization packages. - The Solaris Software 2 of 2 CD-ROM also contains some localization packages. - The Solaris 8 Languages CD-ROM provides message translations (user interface and documentation) for 9 full locales: French, German, Italian, Spanish, Swedish, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. It also includes some additional software as BCP support, optional fonts, and locale-specific utilities.


3. What is a locale? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- A locale is a collection of files, data and sometimes code which contain the necessary information to adapt Solaris to a specific geographical market. A locale is essentially a "bundle", containing information such as:

the messages displayed to the user (localized messages)

codesets

date and time formatting conventions

monetary conventions decimal formatting conventions

collation (sort) order

fonts and/or other writing specific information.

Note: Asian locales also contain input and output methods that are used to input and output the locale's characters. See * below.

* These input/output methods are usually processed by an input method server with various language engines and rendered by X11 internationalization output methods and associated libraries. Due to that, if you want to use native Asian input methods, you must start the input method server prior to do any input; otherwise, the only thing that you can input in the Asian locales would be 7-bit ASCII characters (which cannot render the multibyte fonts for the complex characters that the Asian languages use). Normally, if you start OpenWindows or the CDE desktop with an Asian language/locale as the login, the session manager for each GUI session will automatically start the input method server for you. This is also the recommended way from Globalization group.

Multiple environments exist within the Solaris 8 Operating Environment for support of different national languages. Each of these national environments is called a locale, which contains the language, its characters, fonts and the customs used to input and format data. Locales are not the same as a language, however, because a language can be spoken in various regions or be spoken in different countries.

Note: In Solaris, there can be several locales for a single language.

For example, French is spoken in France and in Canada, but each country has different ways of displaying monetary and time information. Therefore, there is both the fr_FR locale (French - France) as well as the fr_CA locale (French - Canada) to accomodate these different cultural conventions. Additionally, an English speaking user in the United States can select the en_US locale (English for the United States), while an English speaking user in Great Britain can select en_GB (English for Great Britain).

There are 2 types of locales in Solaris 8 - partial locales and full locales.




4. What is the difference between full and partial locales?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Partial Locales Partial locales have the locale functions listed above but they do not provide localized messages (messages translated into the language of the locale ). For example, the Russian ru locale can process input, output, sorting, and so on, but it does not have localized messages in Russian. For this reason it is a partial locale.

Note: In a partial locale , the messages from Solaris are in English.
However, some partial locales *do* use non-English messages because there may be a full locale with the localized messages. For example, the de_AT is a partial locale for Austria. Austrians speaks German but use a different currency. The Austrian is a subset of the German de . It displays messages in German and currency in Austrian shillings instead of German marks. Partial locales are the enablers of all the locales. The partial locales must be installed in order for a full locale to be functional.

With partial locales installed on the system, users can run applications on the target locales, while the OS/GUI messages from Solaris are English.


Full locales Full locales are made up of the partial locales PLUS the packages that provide the translations of messages from Solaris, and also provide on-line help files, optional fonts, and language specific features. A full Solaris locale has all of the listed functions and the localized system messages in that language. For example, the German de locale is a full locale. A German language user sees all system messages in German.

The full locale packages include translations of software messages, on-line help files, optional fonts and language specific features. Full locale packages provide the full set of language features to 9 languages.

Where are the packages for the partial locales? All partial locale packages are available on the Solaris 8 Operating System CD-ROMs. You do not need to have the Solaris 8 Languages CD-ROM to install the partial locales.

Where are the packages for the full locales? The message translation and language-specific feature packages that boost the German, French, Spanish, Swedish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese partial locales into full locales are on the Solaris 8 Languages CD-ROM.

Note: The partial locale packages (enablers) also must be installed from the Solaris 8 Operating System CD-ROMs in order for the full locales to be functional.

What are the full locales available on the Solaris 8 Product?

The Solaris 8 Languages CD-ROM contains message translations and language-specific features for the following languages, which will make partial locales based on these languages into full locales:

Note: There are several partial locales which can use the German messages and thus can provide message translations, effectively turning a partial locale into a full locale. When the German message translation packages and language-specific feature packages are installed using the Solaris 8 Languages CD-ROM, all of the locales in the following table will become "full locales", because they will have access to a fully translated desktop.

6. How do I add a locale to Solaris 8? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are 3 ways to add support for a locale in Solaris 8. 1. During the Initial Solaris 8 Installation: During the Solaris 8 Operating Environment installation process, you are prompted at the "Select Software Localizations" pop-up window to select which geographic regions require your support. The en_ISO8859-1 locale is selected by default. The locale support available after the OS installation process has finished depends on the choices made at this stage. You can select all or multiple regions for which to add locale support. The "tree" of geographical regions can be expanded to select all locales in a region or only some of the region's locales. Note: The Asian geographical regions are on the lower part of this window and could be easily missed.

Attention : You will also be prompted to select a locale at the "Select System Locale" pop-up window. This will be the language that will be used as you install the OS and will then become the default OS locale after reboot.


2. During an upgrade of the Solaris 8 Operating Environment: During the upgrade, when prompted to select support for additional geographic regions, you can select all or multiple countries/territories/regions for which to add locale support. This procedure upgrades your Solaris operating system files and adds the selected locale support.

During the upgrade process of Solaris 8, you are prompted at the "Select Software Localizations" pop-up window to select which geographic regions require your support. You will also be prompted to select a locale at the "Select System Locale" pop-up window. This will be the language that will be used as you upgrade the OS and will then become the default OS locale after reboot.


3. Manually add the packages to an existing installation of the Solaris 8 Operating Environment: Use the pkgadd command to add the required packages to add support for the desired locales to an existing installation of the Solaris 8 Operating Environment. Use the lists below to determine which packages are required. To manually add packages to the system, use the pkgadd command from inside the directory where the packages that you want to add reside.

# pkgadd -d . pkgname

Example: # pkgadd -d . SUNWi2rf

7. What are the packages I need to add XXX locale to Solaris 8? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The packages needed to add support for a locale to Solaris 8 are listed in the outline below.

Attention! Read this first! It is always possible that depending on your CD-ROM or netimage medium, one to several packages listed in these lists are not available on your version of the Solaris 8 media. If that's the case, don't be alarmed or suprised; usually such packages are not critically needed and/or essential enabling packages and the only thing that you will lose is certain translated messages and such which will not disable your overall locale-specific operations in your system.

Note: Starting from Solaris 8, there is no BCP package conflict between Japanese BCP packages and other locales' BCP packages. Thus, you can install all BCP packages in a single system without any problem.

Q2) How do I use the Solaris 8 Languages CD-ROM?

A2) The Solaris 8 Languages CD-ROM has an Installer utility which can be used to select and add support for the 9 full locales. When the CD-ROM is put in the drive and mounted automatically by vold, the Installer utility pops up on-screen. Follow the instructions as prompted by the Installer utility to add the support desired.

Alternatively, the pkgadd command can be used to manually add the packages. To manually add packages for a locale, change directories to:

Q6) How do I add and remove font packages from my system?

A6) To manually add font packages to the system:

Use the pkgadd command:

Notes: 1. Always add the required font packages before the optional font packages. 2. When you are removing font packages from the system, remove the optional font packages first.

Attention! You must follow this procedure to add or remove fonts. The class action scripts in the font packages depend on this for proper function. The optional font packages contain scripts that concatenate information onto the required font packages that are already resident on the system. If the required font packages are not there, problems may occur.


Q7) After selecting a login locale from the CDE login banner, the console screen flashes and turns white. CDE does not start.

A7) If required font packages are not available for a locale, it is possible that the Xserver will not start when a locale is selected that depends on the missing font.

An error may be seen on the console: ***************************************************************** * * The X-server can not be started on display :0... * ***************************************************************** and the dtgreet login banner will not come up, the screen will be white. When the enter key is pressed - the console login prompt will be displayed.

Remote login to the system and tail on /var/dt/Xerrors shows:

# tail /var/dt/Xerrors Conversion failed. Cannot load font.

Warning: Name: FONTLIST_DEFAULT_TAG_STRING Class: XmRendition Conversion failed. Cannot load font.

Tue May 14 10:09:40 2002 error (pid 312): Server for display :0 can't be started.

Also, when logging in as root at console login prompt, the screen flashes and message is seen:

11. Using Locales in Solaris 8 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q1) How do I see what the current locale is?

A1) The current locale setting can be viewed by issuing the command:

# locale

Q2) How do I view all the available locales on the system?

Q3) How do I set a system default locale ?

A3) The system default locale can be set in the /etc/default/init file. -- Example excerpted from /etc/default/init --

The system must be rebooted after modifying the /etc/default/init file in order for the changes to take effect.


Q4) How do I set a user specific locale ?

A4) A locale can be set for a user in their user initialization files such as $HOME/.profile or $HOME/.cshrc (or other shell-specific initialization file). Use the shell-specific syntax for setting any of the variables needed: LANG and LC_*

Examples: sh, ksh - bourne and korn shell syntax: LANG=en_US; export LANG LC_ALL=en_US;export LC_ALL

csh - c shell syntax: setenv LANG en_US setenv LC_ALL en_US


Q5) How do I login to a locale?

A5) A user can select a login locale from the CDE login banner, under the Options button. Select Options, Languages and then select a from the locales listed. This locale becomes the user's CDE session default until a different locale is selected using this procedure.

Note: If the user has a locale setting specified in one of their shell initialization files (see Q2), that locale specification takes precedence over any locales selected at the CDE login banner.


Q6) What does "couldn't set locale correctly" mean?

A6) The error message "couldn't set locale correctly" indicates that there is a problem with the current locale setting. It could be due to missing packages that are needed for the locale or the packages may be loaded but may be corrupted or only partially installed. Check that the system has all the required packages to support the locale with the pkginfo command (see the list of required packages for each locale in section 11).

# pkginfo -l pkgname Example: # pkginfo -l SUNWale

The output from the pkginfo command will also show the status of the package installation. The line for STATUS should read as follows: STATUS: completely installed If the STATUS of the package is "partially installed", re-add the package to the system or pkgrm the package and then pkgadd the package again.

To check if the contents of a package have been corrupted, use the pkgchk command. Note: The pkgchk command must be run as superuser.

# pkgchk pkgname Example: # pkgchk SUNWale If the prompt returns without errors, the pkgchk contents have been verified as good. If errors are reported, they may indicate package corruption. Resolving this issue may involve re-adding the package or pkgrm and pkgadd the package again. Q7) I set the LC_* and LANG variables, but when I run the locale command, they are not set as I expected. What is wrong?

A7) If the variables are not being set correctly to the specified locale:

1. Verify that you are using the correct shell syntax to set the variables.

2. Make certain that you export the variables in sh and ksh.

3. If the syntax is correct and the variables are still not being set correctly, this may indicate that either some of the packages needed for the locale are missing, corrupted or partially installed.

To resolve this issue, review the package list for the locale and use the pkginfo command and the pkgck command as detailed above in A4) above to make certain each package is on the system and is completely installed. If packages are missing, partially installed or corrupted, add/re-add the packages OR pkgrm and pkgadd the packages again.


Q8) What is the LANG variable? What does it affect?

A8) LANG The string used to specify internationalization information that allows users to work with different national conventions. LANG is used as the default if the corresponding environment variable for a particular category is unset or null. If, however, LC_ALL is set to a valid, non-empty value, its contents are used to override both the LANG and the other LC_* variables.


Q9) What are the locale categories?

A9) The categories are as follows:

LC_CTYPE Controls the behavior of character handling functions.

LC_TIME Specifies date and time formats, including month names, days of the week, and common full and abbreviated representations. The default C locale corresponds to U.S. date and time formats.

LC_MONETARY This category specifies the monetary symbols and delimiters used for a particular locale . Few SunOS system commands or library routines actually use this category.

LC_NUMERIC Specifies the decimal separator (or radix character) and the thousands separator. This category specifies the decimal and thousands delimiters. The default C locale corresponds to "." as the decimal delimiter and no thousands delimiter.

LC_COLLATE Specifies the sorting order for a locale and the string conversions required to attain this ordering. Also includes regular expression handlings.

LC_MESSAGES Specifies the language in which the localized messages are written. Also includes yes/no expressions and strings. This category specifies the language of the message database being used. For example, an application may have one message database with French messages, and another database with German messages.

LC_ALL If set to a valid, non-empty string value, override the values of LANG and all the other LC_*variables. Note: Generally the locale name is specified by the LANG environment variable. However, the individual locale categories, if set separately, override LANG. Additionally if LC_ALL is set to a valid, non-empty value, its contents are used to override both the LANG and the other LC_* variables.
